Iterate brief
My position within the intersection of graphic and computational design focuses on
The creation of systems of information (visual, textual, organisational, representational, etc.) through computational and generative means.
The use of randomness as a tool to propel the work (or the user) into unexplored or unimagined territories.
The application of these systems within the context of graphic design practice.
As a starting point, the project is informed by two separate references. The first is the branding of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra by Collins, and its use of the symphosizer to form the basis of the concept on which the entirety of the brand rests. This project exemplifies how a computational interface can lead to practical outcomes, directly or indirectly. The second is the work of Mario Klingemann, with special reference to the projects Appropriate Response and Memories of Passersby I. His interest in working with algorithmic systems and the role of randomness have been particularly influential.
With this context in mind I have formulated the following brief, which has been left open in order to let the project evolve organically, and which will probably be revised several times:
Creative coding allows the designer to create visual information systems based on external data that allow for user input and the introduction of randomness. Design a user interface (or tool) that enables the user to modify, generate, create, or otherwise engage with elements* of an algorithmic visual system, and in which randomness** plays a central role.
*elements can be typographic, photographic, abstract, or any form of data visualisation.
**sources of randomness
